How much time is needed to care for a rabbit?
Before we start to talk about how much time you’ll need to devote to take care of a rabbit that you own, have you spotted the deliberate mistake in the title of this post?
First thing we want to touch on when starting to consider how to care for a bunny, is that keeping a rabbit on its own is not ideal. Rabbits need company of their own kind – and if you’ve got the time and inclination to keep one bunny, a second can really make a positive difference.
Okay – lecture over! Let’s take a look at how much time you’ll need to devote to your rabbits on a daily basis.
Rabbits need daily care and attention
Rabbits enjoy human company but they’ll need to learn that they can trust you. So the more you can handle, brush and cuddle your bunnies, the closer your relationship will become.
Regularly Check for Signs of Illness or Disease
Another reason for handling them is to check for any signs of illness or disease. When you’re playing with your rabbits you can check their teeth, claws and generally keep an eye on them for anything out of the ordinary.
Check your rabbit’s basic necessities
You’ll need to check at least twice per day that your bunny has enough fresh water available. While your doing this also check and remove any soiled bedding from the hutch each day. You’ll also need to ensure that your rabbits have a constant supply of fresh, high-quality hay. This is essential for their health and well-being.
Take Your Rabbits Out to Play
Rabbits have a huge amount of energy and need at least a couple of hours per day out of their hutch. The very best way to ensure this is to fabricate a run that they can go in and out at will. There are various contraptions on the market that can be attached to your rabbit’s hutch that lead out into a good sized run. If this is not possible, then you’ll need to make sure that your rabbit has at enough time out of his hutch every day without fail.
If you don’t have anywhere safe to let your rabbits run loose then you’ll need to supervise them. This can eat up a large portion of your day, so it really is best all round to create an environment where your rabbits are free to go in and out as they please. If this is the case then you’ll need to devote around half an hour morning and evening to look after your rabbits. Also, when you leave for any extended period of time, naturally you’ll need someone at least halfway savvy taking care of your rabbits while you’re gone.
Of course, if you’ve got more time then your bunnies will appreciate it. And you’ll find that you can while away many a happy hour just sitting and watching your rabbits playing together.
We hope this discussion on taking care of rabbits has been helpful, and thanks for dropping by. We hope to see you again very soon. Don’t forget to drop us a line with some pictures of your babies – and we’ll share them with the rest of the online world.
Take care – and till next time, love those rabbits…
