1. TOYS AND CHEWS
Keep those minds and those teeth busy with toys. Giving a guinea pig plenty to tug, toss, and chew will make their days much happier. Tugging is often overlooked – guinea pigs pull at bark and twigs to wear teeth down, and our cavies love that sensation. When you get apple sticks, for instance, try wedging them in the bars of the ex-pen so your piggy can tug at them. We’ve got a post on choosing safe toys, if you need some guidelines. And we've got a ton of great safe toys too!
2. CLEAN SOFT BEDDING
Guinea pigs do love their litter boxes. Often, you will see your piggy sitting in the litter box while eating hay. In fact, most people set up their hay and litter boxes to work this way. Hang your hay feeder on the short end of the box, rather than along the long side, usually works better, since your piggy most likely prefers this orientation when eating. And don’t forget to keep that box super clean, so there is no danger of bumblefoot from standing around on wet litter. Choose a nice soft litter with no dyes or scents. Having some litter box issues? Try this.

3. VARIETY
A daily variety of plants is one of the keys to avoiding illnesses, keeping a good weight, and generally supporting terrific health. Supplement your hay with at least three greens, herbs, flowers, and even some roots, every day. We've developed our own recipes to make that easy...we make our herbal mixes by hand, ourselves, with only the highest quality herbs, flowers, roots, and some berries. We've got different mixes for different needs, including a general superfood, a mix for elder animals, and a calming mix for nervous little animals.
4. GREAT FIBER
There is simply nothing more important to your guinea pig’s health than a constant supply of fresh high quality hay. Hay not only satisfies your guinea pig's instinctual need to chew chew chew, but is absolutely vital to keeping their digestive system moving along properly. A cavy who isn't eating hay is a cavy in trouble. Teeth need the grinding action as well. Never ever let your friend run out of great hay!
